Este volumen reúne seis de las homilías más sugerentes que John Henry Newman solía predicar los domingos por la tarde en la iglesia de Santa María, en Oxford. Están fechadas entre 1831 y 1840, antes de que su autor fuera recibido en la Iglesia católica y nombrado cardenal. Su contenido, intensamente espiritual, fundamentado en el Evangelio y desprovisto de la retórica propia de su tiempo, constituye —sin pretenderlo su autor— el nervio del Movimiento de Oxford. Este grupo, formado por intelectuales y estudiantes de esa universidad, buscaba el modo de fijar su mirada en la de Cristo, como hacen hoy tantos cristianos del tercer milenio.
